Upper and Lower Lips Differ in Colour: Is It Normal?

My upper and lower lips are different colours: is that normal?

You apply only clear balm and step towards a window. The lower lip looks rosy and lively, while the upper lip seems noticeably more muted or brown. Lipstick hides the difference immediately; without colour, the two lips appear to belong to slightly different palettes. Does that need correcting?

Not automatically. Upper and lower lips are more like a duet than identical twins. They face light at different angles, cast different shadows and may naturally carry different tones. Carefully planned permanent lip pigmentation can bring them visually closer together. Natural harmony does not mean hiding every nuance beneath one identical layer of colour.

Two lips create two surfaces for light

The upper lip often angles slightly inward and therefore receives less direct light. The lower lip faces further forward, reflects more and can appear lighter or pinker. A small change in head position may strengthen the difference or make it almost disappear.

Individual skin thickness, visible vessels, natural pigment and surface texture also contribute. Dryness changes perception too: rough areas scatter light differently from a smooth, cared-for surface. The visible contrast is therefore not always one simple “pigment problem”, but the sum of several small factors.

Olga assesses upper and lower lips separately and then as a pair. She asks not only which is darker, but whether the difference truly looks unsettled in normal daylight, during speech and from conversational distance.

The window test separates colour from shadow

Stand beside a large window with bare, relaxed lips and slowly turn your face towards the light. If the upper lip remains clearly darker in several positions, your natural tone is probably involved. If the impression changes dramatically, shadow is playing a larger role.

Do not repeat this test immediately after vigorous rubbing, exfoliation or a hot drink. These can temporarily change blood flow and distort the comparison. A neutral photograph from a normal distance is more useful than an extreme close-up in which every natural pore begins to look like a diagnosis.

Bring unfiltered pictures to the consultation too. Smartphone processing can brighten the lower lip or increase contrast. Olga does not plan a treatment around one algorithm-generated image, but around the recurring impression in the real face.

Harmonising does not mean painting both lips identically

If the upper lip visibly carries less colour, it may need more support than the lower lip. That does not mean implanting the same amount of pigment everywhere. To achieve a balanced result, technique may vary from one area to another.

Heavy, equal coverage would remove natural depth. The moister inner section, central lip and soft borders may still differ. Living lips contain transitions. They should not look as though upper and lower surfaces have been filled in with the same marker pen.

With pronounced cool, greyish or deeper starting tones, a staged approach may be appropriate. Olga does not promise a freely chosen catalogue colour or complete matching in one session. A gentle remaining difference can be more natural and responsible than trying to cover it at any cost.

The desired shade exists only together with the starting tone

Pigment looks different in a cup than it does healed in skin. The same mixture may appear one way on a deeper upper lip and another on a rosier lower lip. A favourite lipstick is therefore not simply selected and transferred identically across both.

Olga develops a base shade that belongs with the unmade-up face. Muted rose, soft rosewood or a custom blend can connect both lips without flattening them. Strong fashion colours and gloss remain the flexible role of decorative cosmetics.

New, changing, sharply defined or unusually dark or light areas are not cosmetically covered with pigment. The same applies to active inflammation, painful cracks or a place that does not heal. Medical or dermatological assessment comes before PMU in these situations.

During healing, the two lips may briefly separate again

Immediately after treatment, both lips look stronger in colour. Upper and lower lips may swell, dry and release surface colour at different rates. The contrast can therefore temporarily appear greater during certain healing stages. This middle phase is not the final result.

Only after the area has fully settled can the interaction between starting tone and healed pigment be judged. A refinement does not automatically mean adding more colour everywhere. Perhaps one section of the upper lip needs support, or perhaps the remaining difference provides exactly the right natural depth.

With existing PMU, Olga checks whether upper and lower lips have faded at the same pace before a lip pigmentation refresh. Old colour is never reinforced blindly simply because one surface currently looks lighter.

Olga Keller helps a duet sound coherent

Olga Keller is a state-trained cosmetician with a medical foundation and has been one of Berlin's pioneers in microblading and permanent makeup since 2013. After thousands of successful treatments, she knows harmony does not come from identical surfaces but from the right relationship between colour, shape and face.

She works with certified German-made pigments that are free from heavy metals and iron oxides. Clients travel from across Germany and abroad, while public figures and politicians trust her discreet work. Her principle remains that the result should look as though nothing has been done.

If a starting tone cannot be brought together naturally or the expectation requires excessive coverage, Olga declines. Hundreds of five-star reviews value this honesty. Natural permanent makeup does not turn upper and lower lips into copies; it lets them become a coherent pair.

Olga Keller has many regular clients in Berlin, and numerous new clients arrive through personal recommendations. A suitable appointment may therefore require a little notice. Enquire early: bringing two different starting tones together carefully deserves more time than the quickest empty slot.
