One Side of the Lip Is Higher: What PMU Can Correct

One side of my lip is higher than the other: what can be corrected?

Everything looks familiar in the mirror. Then you open the front camera, the image flips and one side of the upper lip suddenly seems higher. You inspect old photographs, enlarge the mouth and mentally draw a horizontal line across the face. Within minutes, a detail that had felt completely normal for years becomes an apparent “misalignment”.

Faces are not folded paper pictures. Almost every pair of lips differs slightly from right to left. Carefully designed permanent lip pigmentation can visually calm some differences, especially when colour or border is less visible on one side. It cannot reposition muscles, lift tissue or turn living expression into rigid geometry.

The selfie camera is a strict but unreliable judge

You know your face mainly as a reflection. A non-mirrored photograph swaps the familiar sides and can therefore look strange. Add a wide-angle lens, short shooting distance, a tilted phone and light that models one side more strongly, and a tiny difference may suddenly appear significant.

Before planning any correction, Olga needs several honest views: the relaxed mouth in daylight, a picture taken from normal distance, a few spoken sentences and a natural smile. If the “higher” side appears only in one camera position, the lip should not be redesigned to satisfy the lens.

Olga also asks when you first noticed the difference. A stable asymmetry that has existed for years is not the same as a sudden new change. Treatment begins by understanding what is present, not by making every line equal immediately.

Four causes can look identical in a photograph

One side may seem higher because its natural colour border remains visible further upwards. That is colour asymmetry. The anatomical red lip area may genuinely sit slightly higher, which is a shape difference. Unequal tissue volume can reflect light more strongly on one side. Finally, muscles may pull differently during speech or smiling.

These four possibilities can resemble each other in a still image but require completely different responses. Pigment can supplement a paler section and make an existing boundary easier to see. It cannot redistribute volume or change the direction in which a muscle moves.

This is why Olga looks beyond millimetres. She watches which side rises in a smile, where the true lip border lies and whether shadow is creating a false step. Only once the cause is recognisable can she say whether PMU can provide meaningful balance or whether the natural asymmetry is best left untouched.

Visual correction ends at the true lip skin

If the lower-looking side is simply missing colour, a soft pigment transition may make the border appear more balanced. Small differences around the Cupid's bow or side contour can sometimes be harmonised too. The aim is not a mathematical copy but a calmer overall impression from normal conversational distance.

Placing a line far beyond the natural red lip area onto ordinary facial skin merely to lift one side would be problematic. Pigment may behave differently there and become visible in motion like drawn-on pencil. An artificial straight upper edge is not natural correction.

A suddenly developed one-sided droop of the mouth or face is not a cosmetic issue. If arm weakness, numbness or speech difficulty is also present, emergency medical assistance is needed immediately. New hard areas, pain, non-healing spots or active inflammation should likewise be medically assessed before PMU.

Olga Keller assesses natural lip asymmetry before subtle lip PMU in Berlin

The preliminary drawing must be able to speak and smile

A sketch can look impressively straight on a resting face, yet lips are almost constantly moving. Olga therefore checks the proposed line during speech, a small smile and from several angles. A correction that succeeds only in a frontal close-up is not a successful correction.

She does not follow a rule of “lower the high side and raise the low side”. Pigment can add to existing lip colour but cannot erase an anatomical edge. Often the best balance comes from softening one transition, clarifying a pale section and calming the overall tone. The eye then notices less difference even though the face remains naturally alive and asymmetric.

Bring photographs in which you like your mouth as well as those where the difference bothers you. They reveal which lighting, expression or camera situations contribute. Good planning studies not only the perceived fault but everything that is already right.

Immediately after treatment is too early for millimetres

Freshly pigmented lips have stronger colour and may swell temporarily. Because swelling is rarely identical on both sides, an existing asymmetry may initially look more pronounced or a new one may seem to appear. The dry healing stage can also display colour differently from section to section.

Success should not be judged on the first evening with a ruler app. Only after the area has fully settled can colour, anatomy and pigment be assessed together. At a refinement appointment, Olga decides specifically whether one small area needs more balance. Darkening everything would only make the result unnecessarily heavy.

If lip PMU is already present, Olga reassesses it before a lip pigmentation refresh. An old asymmetric outline should never simply be reinforced. Sometimes waiting, allowing it to fade or choosing another route is more honest than adding pigment.

Olga Keller promises harmony, not a mirrored copy

Olga Keller is a state-trained cosmetician with a medical foundation and has been one of Berlin's pioneers in microblading and permanent makeup since 2013. After thousands of successful treatments, she knows that a perfectly mirrored mouth may look less natural in conversation than a carefully balanced individual shape.

She uses certified German-made pigments that are free from heavy metals and iron oxides. Clients travel to her from across Germany and abroad, while public figures and politicians trust her discreet signature. Her standard is simple: the result should look as though nothing has been done.

If colour cannot meaningfully solve muscular or anatomical asymmetry, Olga says so and declines a false correction. Hundreds of five-star reviews appreciate that clarity. Natural permanent makeup does not make both halves of a face identical; it helps them appear calmer together.

Olga Keller has many regular clients in Berlin, and numerous new clients arrive through personal recommendations. A suitable appointment may therefore require a little notice. Enquire early: thoughtful balance deserves more care than the fastest empty gap in a calendar.
