My Cupid's bow is barely visible: can it be defined naturally?
You place lipstick at the highest point of the upper lip, draw a small peak and immediately correct it. Too pointed. On the second attempt the V becomes wider; on the third, one side sits higher. In minutes, an ordinary makeup step has turned into a drawing exercise. Your soft Cupid's bow rarely bothers you without colour, yet lipstick suddenly makes you wish for an unmistakable guide.
Carefully planned permanent lip pigmentation can make the natural centre of the upper lip easier to read. It does not need to invent a sharp heart. Often it is enough to organise the existing colour around two gentle high points and the dip between them. The result looks less “designed” and more as though your own border has finally found flattering light.
A Cupid's bow does not have to resemble the letter V
The Cupid's bow comes in many forms. Some upper lips have two distinct peaks and a deep central dip. Others resemble a shallow wave, form a broad curve or show only the slightest indentation. None is incomplete. This is an anatomical transition, not a beauty logo that should look identical on every face.
A very pointed V may suit strong facial features but feel unexpectedly severe on a softer face. A gentle arc can be particularly elegant because it moves quietly during speech and smiling. The useful question is not “How strongly can we draw the heart?” but “Which line already belongs to this mouth?”
Olga also considers the philtrum columns, the space below the nose, the side curves and the movement of the upper lip. The centre must never be treated as an isolated emblem. It is beautiful only when it joins the entire lip shape logically.
Is the anatomy soft, or is the colour simply quiet?
Sometimes the anatomical bow is clear but natural lip colour does not reach its boundary evenly. Without lipstick, the heart then looks blurred although the shape exists. In other cases the upper lip is genuinely shallow in the centre. Pigment can provide clarity in the first situation; in the second, it should only accompany the anatomy.
A photograph beside a window is more revealing than a magnified bathroom selfie. Remove lipstick and pencil, allow shiny balm to absorb and photograph the relaxed mouth from the front. Then record a short sequence while speaking. A line that seems perfect in a still picture may become too rigid in motion.
Previous pigment, a tiny scar or a slight colour difference between the two peaks can also alter the impression. During the consultation Olga separates shape, colour, light and movement. Only then does she decide whether anything should be added.
The preliminary drawing is a rehearsal, not a promise
The border is sketched before treatment, but that drawing is not a target to be filled in opaquely. It is a test. Do the peaks sit naturally beneath the nose and in relation to the centre of the face? Does the line remain convincing during a smile? Does it still look attractive from normal conversational distance?
Olga does not use a symmetrical stamp. Faces are alive and never mathematically identical. One peak may be fractionally higher, the centre slightly offset or muscle movement stronger on one side. A small visual balance may be possible; rigid geometry would make normal expression look less natural.
The true red lip area is especially important. A high peak implanted into ordinary skin above that border may heal differently and resemble a drawn-on lip pencil. Natural definition means making the existing form easier to see, not constructing a new upper lip with pigment.
Greater definition is not the same as greater volume
A clearer Cupid's bow can make the mouth appear more composed. It does not physically plump the lips or shorten the space beneath the nose. PMU changes colour, not tissue volume. Expecting a filler effect would invite an overly strong outline and sacrifice the very naturalness the treatment should protect.
The permanent base tone therefore usually remains softer than a favourite lipstick. Muted rose, rosewood or a custom neutral shade combines with the existing lip colour after healing. Pencil, dramatic colour and gloss can still be worn over it for an evening look.
Active cold sores, painful cracks, inflammation or unexplained changes are not pigmented over. Medication and a known tendency to herpes should be discussed honestly; prescribed treatment must never be changed independently. Healthy, settled skin is part of a beautiful result.
The freshly drawn heart is not the healed heart
Immediately after pigmentation, the Cupid's bow appears more defined and colour is stronger. Temporary swelling may even make both peaks look higher. Over the following days the surface becomes drier, the shade loses intensity and some sections may briefly appear uneven.
The shape should not be judged each morning in a magnifying mirror. Only once the area has fully settled can Olga see whether the centre blends softly enough. A refinement does not automatically mean adding a sharper peak. One transition may need a little more colour, or the restrained first result may already be exactly right.
With existing PMU, Olga examines the previous border before a lip pigmentation refresh. A bow that was once placed too high must not simply be darkened. The remaining colour, current skin and present wishes are reassessed together.
Olga Keller looks for your signature, not her template
Olga Keller is a state-trained cosmetician with a medical foundation and has been one of Berlin's pioneers in microblading and permanent makeup since 2013. After thousands of successful treatments, she recognises when a subtle Cupid's bow needs colour and when its gentle form already suits the face perfectly.
She works with certified German-made pigments that are free from heavy metals and iron oxides. Clients travel to her from throughout Germany and abroad, and public figures and politicians trust her discreet approach. Her principle is simple: the result should look as though nothing has been done.
If a requested peak would sit beyond the natural lip or dominate the face, Olga declines it. Hundreds of five-star reviews appreciate this honesty. Natural permanent makeup does not give every mouth the same heart; it makes each person's own shape feel a little more effortlessly visible.
Olga Keller has many regular clients in Berlin, and numerous new clients come through personal recommendations. A suitable appointment may therefore require some notice. Enquire early: a line that will accompany you for a long time deserves more attention than the fastest empty space in a calendar.
