Permanent eyeliner shapes: classic, cat-eye or subtle?
Permanent eyeliner can make the eyes look clearer, fresher and more awake. But not every eyeliner shape suits every eye. Classic liner, cat-eye, a subtle line and lash line enhancement differ in style, healing, daily wearability and long-term elegance. Because permanent makeup is visible every day, the shape should be chosen with great care.
Olga Keller personally performs PMU treatments and has been a Berlin pioneer in microblading and permanent makeup since 2013. As a state-trained cosmetician with a medical foundation, she considers eye shape, eyelid fold, skin, lashes, expression and personal style. Her philosophy is naturalness: eyeliner should support the eyes, not dominate the face.
The classic eyeliner
Classic eyeliner follows the upper lash line and is usually a little more visible than pure lash enhancement. It can define the eyes without looking dramatic. This shape suits clients who already like a fine eyeliner line in everyday life and want to save time in the morning.
The right thickness is essential. A line that looks elegant immediately after treatment may feel too hard long term if it was planned too wide. Olga Keller therefore draws the shape first and checks how it looks with open and closed eyes. Classic eyeliner must work on the whole face, not only in a close mirror.
Cat-eye: beautiful, but not for every eye
A cat-eye can look seductive and visually lift the outer eye corner. With permanent makeup, however, this shape requires special caution. What looks exciting as evening makeup may be too dominant as a permanent line. The skin at the outer lid also changes over time, so a strong wing may age differently than expected.
For hooded lids, mature skin or asymmetrical eyes, Olga Keller often recommends a softer version instead of a dramatic cat-eye. Sometimes a minimally extended classic line is enough to open the eyes. If a cat-eye would not heal or age harmoniously, she says so clearly.
Subtle line and lash enhancement
The most subtle option is often the most elegant. With lash line enhancement, pigment is placed directly between the lashes. The eyes look clearer and the lashes denser, but there is no strong eyeliner line. This technique is ideal for women who want to look groomed without obvious makeup.
For delicate features, fair lashes, a natural style or mature skin, this option is often more flattering than visible eyeliner. It leaves room for extra makeup in the evening, while the everyday look remains soft and timeless.
Lower eyeliner: when does it help?
Many clients ask whether the lower lid should also be pigmented. A soft lower shadow can be helpful when the eyes otherwise look unbalanced. A dark continuous lower line, however, can make eyes look smaller or more tired. The lower area is usually planned much more carefully and lightly.
Olga Keller checks whether lower eyeliner truly brings a benefit. Often the best solution is a more defined upper lash line with only minimal support below. With permanent makeup, harmony matters more than the maximum amount of pigment.
Colour, healing and safety
For eyeliner PMU, Olga Keller uses certified German-made pigments free from heavy metals and iron oxides. The colour is selected according to lashes, skin undertone and desired intensity. Deep black can be elegant, but for some clients a softer dark brown looks more natural.
After treatment, the lid edge may feel sensitive and the colour looks stronger at first. Sauna, swimming, eye makeup, rubbing and heavy sweating should be avoided during early healing. A later permanent eyeliner refresh is planned carefully so the line does not become wider with every session.
Glasses, contact lenses and a tendency toward watery or dry eyes should be mentioned during consultation. Sensitive eyes need especially careful planning. The appointment should not be scheduled directly before holidays, important photos or intense sport phases. A few calm days afterwards make aftercare much easier.
Many women bring reference photos of eyeliner they like. This is useful, but no photo replaces your own eyelid anatomy. Olga Keller uses references as a style direction, not as a template. The important questions are how the line will heal, how it looks with open eyes and whether it remains harmonious without makeup.
Especially on mature skin, restraint is often more flattering. A subtle line can look fresher than a wide one because it opens the eyes without adding heaviness. If you want more expression in the evening, you can still add makeup on top. Permanent makeup should improve the base, not remove every makeup option.
