Eyeliner Always Too Thick? Find a Finer PMU Solution

My eyeliner always becomes too thick: is a finer permanent solution possible?

The first stroke was actually fine. Then the outer corner needed one more millimetre, the left side sat slightly higher, and the right needed “just a quick adjustment”. Five minutes later, a delicate contour has become a broad black line. Not because that was the intention, but because eyeliner almost always grows in only one direction when corrected.

Subtle lash-line enhancement can begin at precisely this point. It creates a calm darker base without being rebuilt every morning. Yet “permanently fine” is not achieved simply by pigmenting the thinnest possible stroke. It comes from a design that remains stable with the eyes open and does not need visual rescue.

The one-way street of correction

A pencil can lengthen a short line, darken a pale section and lift a low edge. What it can hardly do is remove colour precisely without blurring the border. Every small correction therefore becomes an extra layer. The issue is less about artistic talent than the logic of the material.

Eyes are also naturally different. Lids open differently, lashes do not grow in identical patterns and skin moves while it is being drawn on. Trying to copy one side exactly onto the other often continues until both lines are equally wide, but too dominant for either eye.

Before considering PMU, photograph your eyeliner immediately after the first stroke and again after every correction. The comparison reveals which line you actually liked. It is usually not the finished black area, but the first moment when the lash edge simply looked clearer.

“Fine” can describe three entirely different results

For one woman, fine means closing only the pale gaps between lashes. Another wants a visible hairline contour above the roots. A third imagines narrow eyeliner with a tiny finish at the outer corner. All three may say “very natural” during consultation while picturing different outcomes.

Olga therefore does not begin with millimetres. She asks what should be visible at normal conversational distance: denser-looking lashes, a clear eye edge or deliberately drawn eyeliner? That answer determines whether enhancement is enough or whether fine permanent eyeliner is more appropriate.

Colour changes the impression too. Soft charcoal can appear lighter than deep black at the same width. A smooth transition from roots to contour feels quieter than a hard upper border. Fineness is not only a number; it is the interaction of placement, tone and contrast.

The open-eye test matters more than a ruler

A drawing is not judged only on a closed lid. What matters is how much remains visible when the eye is naturally open. On a mobile or slightly hooded lid, a line may look narrow while reclining yet feel heavy in daily life. Conversely, an overly cautious contour may vanish completely into the fold.

Olga views both eyes while the client sits, looks forward and uses natural expression. Small anatomical differences are not made “symmetrical” by adding more width. The contours should harmonise as a pair without denying the individual form of each eye.

A good preliminary drawing may feel almost uneventful. Its purpose is not to dramatise the eventual result but to make a decision possible. If you notice the line before you notice your eyes, the proposal is probably already too loud for a naturally fine goal.

Olga Keller discusses the design of exceptionally fine permanent eyeliner in Berlin

What a permanent line should not try to do

PMU is not a daily accessory. A broad fashionable wing cannot be shortened the next morning. The pigmented base should therefore be more conservative than the boldest look you occasionally wear. You can add make-up above it for an evening; the quiet foundation remains suitable for ordinary days.

Existing dark eyeliner creates different limits. New pigment cannot make an old area narrower. Before refreshing permanent eyeliner, Olga must assess whether its colour and form can sensibly be complemented. Sometimes doing nothing is the finest possible decision.

Irritated, inflamed or medically unexplained eyes are not treated either. Prescribed medicine and eye drops are never changed independently for a beauty appointment. A lasting contour begins with a healthy, stable treatment area and realistic expectations.

Why Olga Keller would rather leave out one millimetre

Olga Keller is a state-trained cosmetician with a medical foundation and has been among Berlin's microblading and PMU pioneers since 2013. She has completed thousands of treatments; clients travel from across Germany and abroad. Known personalities and politicians also trust her discretion.

She uses certified German-made pigments free from heavy metals and iron oxides. Her guiding idea is naturalness: a result should look as though nothing has been done. With eyeliner, that often means deliberately not adding the final supposedly necessary millimetre.

If a requested form will not be harmonious, old pigmentation prevents a clean result or the eyes are not ready, Olga declines treatment. Hundreds of five-star reviews show that clients particularly value this restraint.

The best permanent solution still leaves freedom

A fine base should simplify the morning, not determine every future look. Wear it alone, combine it with mascara or extend it with a washable wing for an evening. The permanent element handles the difficult work at the lash roots, while the changeable part remains in your hands.

Bring photographs of both your successful lines and the ones that became too thick. Both are useful: good examples show the goal, while the others reveal where the daily correction loop begins. The result is not standard eyeliner, but an answer designed for your particular morning.

Olga Keller personally cares for many returning clients in Berlin, and numerous new clients arrive through personal recommendations. A suitable appointment may therefore need a little notice. Enquire early: with such fine permanent work, careful planning matters more than the fastest available slot.
