When Should You Refresh Lip Permanent Makeup? Signs

When should you refresh permanent makeup on the lips?

Lip permanent makeup rarely fades like a lamp dimming evenly. The centre may become transparent first while colour remains near the edge. Corners can lose clarity or only the undertone may change. The calendar therefore does not decide when a lip PMU refresh is due. The individual map of the lips does.

As broad guidance, many clients consider an assessment after roughly two to three years. Some lips remain harmonious longer; others become quieter sooner. The useful question is not whether a number has been reached, but whether natural lip colour, residual pigment and facial expression still form a calm whole.

The centre is often the first storyteller

The inner lip is constantly moving and meets saliva, drinks, food and care products. It may therefore appear transparent before the outer area. This is initially normal. A refresh becomes relevant when the transition between natural lip colour and pigment looks visibly uneven or patchy.

Do not judge immediately after balm or when lips are extremely dry. Shine, circulation and moisture change colour perception. Compare makeup-free lips in neutral daylight on several days. One pale morning is not yet a treatment signal.

A visible outline can be both too much and too little

Natural lip PMU should not enclose the mouth like a drawn border. If the inner colour fades faster, the outline may suddenly appear stronger even though it has not darkened. Simply tracing that line again would be the wrong response. The goal is to restore a soft connection to the centre.

If part of the natural border has genuinely lost definition, careful reinforcement can make sense. Olga always works within real anatomy. An old line outside the vermilion cannot be painted invisible with fresh colour. That situation requires a different plan from an ordinary refresh.

Undertone matters more than brightness alone

PMU may become lighter while retaining a harmonious character. A noticeable shift towards grey, violet, red or orange is more complex. The impression arises from natural lip colour, circulation, skin and residual pigment. A new shade cannot be selected simply from the name of an inspiration colour.

Olga assesses whether the existing tone can be continued or corrected responsibly. With very dark, dense or unsuitable remnants, more pigment is not automatically the answer. Waiting or specialist advice about lightening may be wiser than generic coverage.

Daily-life signals are more reliable than an anniversary

The right moment often appears in ordinary life. You reach for lipstick every day because the centre looks uneven; the corners appear different; photographs reveal patchy distribution; or the previously natural result is visible only beneath heavy balm. These observations are more useful than an appointment made simply because it is “time again”.

A very delicate result may also be exactly right. If shape and tone remain harmonious and you feel comfortable, treatment is unnecessary. Greater saturation does not automatically look more polished. Lip pigmentation or a refresh makes sense when it solves a real concern, not when it reassures a calendar.

Before the appointment, the honest starting point matters

Photograph clean lips without balm or lipstick from the front and with relaxed expression. Note the approximate year, number of sessions and previous reactions. A history of cold sores, medication and relevant health information belongs in the conversation. Any medical prevention or medication is planned only with medical guidance.

Skin must be calm, intact and fully healed. Cosmetic pigmentation does not take place over inflammation, injury, unusual changes or an active cold sore. Do not aggressively scrub or pick the lips beforehand. A healthy ordinary baseline is more valuable than temporarily “perfect” smoothness.

A good refresh still looks like lips

During treatment, Olga does not add an identical amount everywhere. She reads the centre, border, corners and natural undertone as one connected map. Fresh colour should work transparently with the lip itself. Once healed, the mouth remains lively and mobile rather than looking covered by fixed lipstick.

Olga Keller is a state-trained cosmetician with a medical foundation and a Berlin microblading pioneer since 2013. Nearly 13 years and thousands of successful PMU treatments shape her judgement. Clients travel from Germany and abroad, while known personalities and politicians trust her discreet work. She uses certified German-made pigments free from heavy metals and iron oxides and declines unsuitable treatments.

Her philosophy for permanent makeup is naturalness: the result should look as though nothing was done. Hundreds of five-star reviews on Google, Treatwell, Facebook and other platforms support this approach. Let Olga read your personal lip map before adding colour merely because a certain year has arrived.

Many regular clients return to Olga and new clients often find her through recommendations, so a suitable appointment may require a little advance planning. That brief wait is a positive expression of trust and carefully reserved treatment time.
