Microblading vs powder brows — which technique is right for you?
Full, perfectly shaped eyebrows frame the face like nothing else. But if you are considering permanent eyebrows, you will quickly face a key decision: microblading or powder brows? Both techniques deliver stunning results, yet they differ fundamentally in method, appearance and longevity. At Kosmetikinstitut Expert in Berlin, Olga Keller provides a personal consultation to help you find the method that matches your skin type, lifestyle and aesthetic goals.
What is microblading?
With microblading a fine hand tool — known as a blade — is used to create hair-thin incisions in the upper skin layer, which are then filled with colour pigment. Each stroke mimics a single natural eyebrow hair. The result looks remarkably real and is especially suited to women who want the most natural, barely-there effect possible.
Olga Keller has mastered this technique since 2013 — one of the first cosmetologists in Berlin to offer it. Nearly 13 years of experience show in every stroke: lines follow the natural growth direction with varying thickness and length, making the result indistinguishable from real brows even at close range.
What are powder brows?
Powder brows — also called ombré brows — use a PMU device to deposit colour in fine pixel-like dots. Rather than individual hairs the technique creates a soft, evenly shaded effect, much like brow powder applied with a brush. The result appears slightly more defined and fuller than microblading.
Powder brows are an excellent choice for women who enjoy a light make-up look on their brows every morning — only permanent. The technique is also particularly well suited to skin types where microblading reaches its limits.
Key differences at a glance
The main distinction lies in texture. Microblading produces individual, fine hair strokes for an ultra-natural look. Powder brows create a soft shading effect for a slightly more polished appearance. Both techniques use premium certified pigments of German manufacture — free of heavy metals and iron oxide — which Olga Keller uses exclusively in her studio.
Healing also differs. Microblading strokes form delicate scabs that shed after roughly seven to ten days. Powder brows heal more like a mild sunburn — the colour appears stronger at first and settles to its final shade within two to three weeks. In both cases a follow-up appointment around four weeks later lets Olga Keller perfect the result.
Which skin type for which technique?
This point is often underestimated but is crucial for a lasting outcome. Normal to dry skin is ideal for microblading — the fine strokes retain their sharpness and definition throughout the wear time. Oily or large-pored skin, however, can cause microblading strokes to blur over time. In such cases Olga Keller usually recommends powder brows, as the pixel technique is significantly more resistant to sebum production.
Microshading — a combination of fine strokes and gentle shading — can also be an ideal solution if you cannot decide or want a hybrid approach. Olga Keller assesses your skin type during the consultation and recommends the technique that promises the best long-term result for your skin.
Longevity and touch-ups
Microblading typically lasts 12 to 18 months before the fine strokes noticeably fade. Powder brows often last slightly longer — usually 18 to 24 months — because the shading technique deposits pigment more deeply and evenly. In both cases individual skin type, sun exposure and skincare routine significantly influence durability.
When the result loses intensity after one to two years, a straightforward touch-up refreshes the colour. The touch-up session is shorter than the initial treatment and restores the brows to the desired shade.
The personal consultation makes the difference
Neither technique is universally superior — what matters is the right choice for you personally. And this is precisely where Olga Keller excels: as a state-certified cosmetologist with a medical foundation she analyses not only your skin type but also considers your face shape, natural brow growth, skin tone and personal style. If a technique would not deliver the optimal result in your case, she will tell you honestly — because satisfaction and natural beauty come first.
It is no coincidence that clients travel from across Germany and abroad to see Olga Keller in Berlin. Well-known personalities and politicians trust her — and hundreds of five-star reviews on Google, Facebook and Treatwell speak for themselves.
