Permanent lip makeup healing: swelling, colour and care
Permanent lip makeup can refresh natural lip colour, define the contour and make the mouth look more balanced. After the treatment, however, many clients go through a phase of uncertainty. The lips may be swollen, the colour may look stronger than expected, and the final result is not visible yet. Understanding the healing process makes the first days much easier.
Olga Keller personally performs permanent makeup treatments and explains the healing process before every lip pigmentation. She is a state-trained cosmetician with a medical foundation, a Berlin pioneer in microblading and permanent makeup since 2013, and is known for natural results. Her philosophy is simple: lips should look fresher and more harmonious, not painted on.
The first hours after treatment
Immediately after pigmentation, the lips often look more intense than the final plan. This is normal. Fresh pigment appears very visible in the upper skin layers, and swelling can make the colour look even stronger. Some clients love the fresh intensity; others worry for a moment. The important point is that this is not the healed result.
Swelling varies from person to person. It depends on skin sensitivity, circulation, natural lip volume and the technique used. For many clients it calms down within a few hours; for others it can last until the next day. Cooling may feel pleasant, but it must be clean and indirect. Olga Keller gives individual instructions so the fresh pigmentation is not irritated.
Why the colour changes
The colour changes several times during healing. At first it looks stronger. In the following days, dry areas or fine flakes can make it appear uneven. Later it may suddenly look too pale, sometimes almost as if the pigment has disappeared. Only after several weeks does the colour settle into its true tone. This fluctuation is part of normal lip healing.
For permanent makeup, Olga Keller uses certified German-made pigments that are free from heavy metals and iron oxides. The colour is selected according to natural lip tone, skin undertone, skin type and the desired result. This is especially important for lips, because cool or bluish undertones need expert correction rather than simply adding a fashionable shade.
Typical healing day by day
On the first day, the lips usually feel sensitive and look bright. On the second and third day, dryness and tightness can appear. Then the surface begins to renew itself, and small dry areas may loosen naturally. Do not pick, scratch or rub. Mechanical irritation can remove pigment unevenly and disturb the result.
After about a week, the lips often look calm from the outside. Inside the skin, healing continues. The colour can look too light during this stage, and many clients wonder whether enough pigment has stayed. Olga Keller explains this phase in advance: lip PMU needs patience, because the final colour only becomes visible after deeper regeneration.
Correct aftercare for lip PMU
Aftercare should be clean, calm and consistent. During the first phase, drink hot beverages carefully, avoid spicy food, do not lick the lips and do not apply lipstick. Sauna, solarium, swimming pool, intense exercise and direct sun are also unsuitable. The lips need protection, but not constant over-care.
Olga Keller gives aftercare advice based on your skin and treatment. Use only suitable products and avoid touching the lips unnecessarily. Kissing, scrubs, acids or retinol around the mouth should wait until healing is complete. The calmer the skin can recover, the more even the result can become.
Touch-up and refreshing
A touch-up is especially important with lips. It balances areas that retained less pigment and refines the colour intensity. This does not mean the first treatment was unsuccessful. Lip skin is mobile, well supplied with blood and very individual. A controlled second appointment is part of a professional process.
When the colour becomes softer over time, a lip PMU refresh can restore freshness. A general permanent makeup refresh is always planned individually. Olga Keller prefers a careful, natural build-up rather than oversaturating the lips from the beginning.
